Ouch! If you have not already, you might want to invest in an energy audit. An investment in additional insulation might help with future bills. You can get a $1,500 rebate in MA for doing that improvement. There are also rebates for switching from oil to gas or just getting a more energy efficient oil furnace - but generally it costs money in the short term to save money in the long term.
Once I recover from my solar panel purchase, I am going to start looking at more efficient dishwasher and then some duel flush toilets. I know someone who spent $3,500 on new toilets, appliances, and insulation and has seen a 40% decrease in water and other utility bills.
OMG! I thought my gas bill was bad at a high of $475/month. (Mostly it has been $300/month with aggresive rationing). But that is amazing. I am so sorry. A lot of people trying to market rentals that use oil heat are finding tenants are not going to pay more rent on top of more for oil heat. I think this will influence the rental market more than people have been talking about. We will see.
Don't feel too bad for me. I probably won't get another oil delivery until next December (500 gallon tank). My total annual oil bill for 2008 will probably be $3,000. That's double what it was, but on a monthly basis less than $300. The electric runs $145 a month, but that's it. No gas bill. No water bill. No sewer bill.
